My short list of coin collector mistakes!

While I have no corner on the coin market when it comes to understanding all the mistakes which can be made in the coin collecting world I would like to list a few which I believe can easily be avoided by those who are new to using coins as an investment:

  • Never buy a coin from a phone solicitor - no matter how good it sounds it will not be worth your investment time or money. Work instead to establish your own relationships with coin dealors on your own terms.
  • Do not buy a "raw" coin of any value - you will be certain to be paying for a higher grade coin than you will receive. Until you can grade coins professionally buy only those graded by NGC or PCGS.
  • Do not take the grade of one grading service to be the same as that of another - they have different standards or evaluate similar standards differently. In fact even coins graded from a single service will be graded differently over time.
  • Coins advertised on TV are priced to pay for the TV time - TV time is expensive and someone has to pay for it.
  • Collectible markets move in cycles - sort of like everything else. If you don't know if you are in an up cycle or a down cycle then how can you consider this investing?
  • Do not buy the latest "hot" coin - it will probably not be hot for long. Look for the coins which will become hot and buy those (easier said than done, I know, but it's where the money is).
  • Do not buy non-standard units - silver and gold sells by the troy ounce even when traded in large amounts such as at the NYMEX exchange where 5,000 oz are traded on one contract. Coins sell by the face amount or by the piece. If you are buying by a different unit of measure (pound, box, handful, etc.) you run a large risk of paying WAY too much!

(more to be added as I think of them)

(if you think of one be sure to email it to me)

Hobbies cost money, thats the trade off for the enjoyment.
Investments require time and effort to increase the chance of making money.
